Platycerium ridleyi
Platycerium ridleyi, from the forests of Peninsular Malaysia, southern Thailand, Sumatra and Borneo, is one of the most sought-after staghorn ferns: its shield fronds are deeply ribbed and hug the mount, and its upright fertile fronds carry their spores on small spoon-shaped lobes. These are the ridleyi forms we grow in Taiwan and source from partner growers in Thailand.

Platycerium ridleyi 'Monkey King', also sold as 'Wide Frond', is a round-form selection of P. ridleyi with the deeply ribbed shield fronds of the species. Its fertile fronds have broader, more rounded lobes than the species.

P. ridleyi is one of the tropical species that prefer to stay warm all year. Staghorn ferns in general grow best between 15 and 30 °C; keep P. ridleyi out of the cool spells that some other species cope with, and bring it into a heated space in a cold snap.
It needs high humidity, bright filtered light and strong air movement. Let the mount dry slightly between waterings: P. ridleyi rots if it is kept wet in still air. Humidity only helps when the air keeps moving.
