How to grow Platycerium hybrids

Most hybrids are grown like their parents: mounted on a board or in a basket, in bright filtered light, and watered when the mount is nearly dry. Each variety above lists its parent where we know it.

Pups follow the parents too. Hybrids of pup-forming species such as P. willinckii, P. bifurcatum, P. hillii and P. veitchii can make pups, depending on conditions. If one parent is a single-crown species such as P. ridleyi, P. grande or P. wandae, the hybrid may not make pups. See staghorn fern pups.

For mounting, watering and feeding, start with the care quick reference and how to mount a staghorn fern.

Like all staghorn ferns they are epiphytes: grow them mounted on a board or in a basket, never in soil. Light, temperature, humidity and watering at a glance: staghorn fern care quick reference. Full care notes: The Platycerium Textbook.
