Giant staghorn ferns
These species grow into large specimen plants: P. grande, P. superbum, P. wandae, P. holttumii, P. coronarium and P. wallichii. All six grow as a single crown: they cannot form pups and are raised from spores.

Platycerium coronarium
Platycerium coronarium has tall, crown-like shield fronds and very long, pendant fertile fronds. Its spores form on special rounded lobes near the base of the fertile fronds.
- Native to
- Peninsular Malaysia, southern Thailand, Myanmar, Borneo, Sumatra, Java and the Philippines
In our wholesale catalogue now: P. coronarium · P. coronarium Philippine · P. coronarium 'QQ' (TC) · P. (hillii × coronarium) 'Flamenco'

Platycerium grande
Platycerium grande from the Philippines is a giant staghorn with tall, deeply lobed shield fronds and broad, pendant fertile fronds. It carries two spore patches on each fertile frond, which separates it from the similar P. superbum.
- Native to
- The Philippines (Mindanao)
In our wholesale catalogue now: P. grande · P. grande Nerow · P. (grande × elephantotis) 'B'

Platycerium superbum
Platycerium superbum from eastern Australia is a giant staghorn with tall, lobed shield fronds and broad, pendant fertile fronds. It carries one spore patch on each fertile frond, which separates it from the similar P. grande.
- Native to
- Queensland and northern New South Wales, Australia
In our wholesale catalogue now: P. superbum · P. superbum 'Dwarf'

Platycerium wallichii
Platycerium wallichii, the Indian staghorn, grows from Myanmar and Thailand into northeast India and Yunnan. Its broad, lobed fertile fronds carry large spore patches, and it rests through the cool dry season.

Platycerium wandae
Platycerium wandae from New Guinea is the largest staghorn fern and can grow over 2 metres across. Its shield fronds have a frilly, crested front edge, a feature no other species has.
- Native to
- New Guinea

P. coronarium, P. grande, P. superbum, P. wandae, P. holttumii and P. wallichii grow as a single crown and cannot form pups, so new plants are raised from spores. See which species make pups.
Plan for size. Mount them on a large board from the start, tie them over the old brown shield fronds, and move them to a bigger board when the shield fronds reach the edge. See how to mount a staghorn fern.
Give them warmth and bright, filtered light. P. coronarium prefers to stay warm all year and needs high humidity, and is best hung high so its long fertile fronds can trail.
Some rest in the cool season. P. wallichii goes dormant in the cool dry season, so reduce watering then and resume when new growth appears.
Like all staghorn ferns they are epiphytes: grow them mounted on a board or in a basket, never in soil. Light, temperature, humidity and watering at a glance: staghorn fern care quick reference. Full care notes: The Platycerium Textbook.
