Dwarf Staghorn Ferns (Platycerium)

Dwarf staghorn ferns stay compact enough for small mounts, shelves and indoor collections, and they are among the most requested plants from our greenhouse. Many come from the P. willinckii line; there are also dwarf forms of P. ridleyi.

Platycerium 'Bacteria' staghorn fern

Platycerium 'Bacteria'

Platycerium 'Bacteria' is a dwarf mutation of P. willinckii and one of the six classic willinckii dwarfs; it was once called the smallest staghorn fern in the world. Its fertile fronds are short, broad and many-forked, with short fingers and a deeper green than most dwarfs. Its tiny size makes it happiest in a controlled indoor setup under grow lights.

How to grow dwarf staghorn ferns

Small mounts dry out faster than large ones, so check dwarfs more often. Water when the moss surface is dry and the mount feels light, and soak it right through.

Give them bright, filtered light and steady humidity, 50–80% with gentle air movement. Indoors, grow lights for 16–20 hours a day can stand in for daylight.

After shipping, dwarfs recover best in a clear, closed nursing box in bright, indirect light, watered only when they feel light. See staghorn ferns after shipping.

Willinckii-line dwarfs follow their parent and can make pups. Dwarf forms of single-crown species, such as P. ridleyi, P. wandae and P. superbum, cannot form pups. See staghorn fern pups.

Like all staghorn ferns they are epiphytes: grow them mounted on a board or in a basket, never in soil. Light, temperature, humidity and watering at a glance: staghorn fern care quick reference. Full care notes: The Platycerium Textbook.
