Platycerium veitchii 'Pedro Tatsuta'
Platycerium veitchii 'Pedro Tatsuta' (also sold as 'Pedro') was raised in 1997 by the Brazilian grower Pedro Russo and spread worldwide by Carlos Tatsuta. Its shield and fertile fronds are very white, the fertile fronds thrust upward, and the tall, forked shield fronds show clear dark veins. It is on the delicate side: give it a cool, airy spot in summer and even light so the shield fronds grow symmetrically — it does well indoors.

In the wild P. veitchii often grows on rocks in dry, sunny places, and in cultivation it takes more sun and drier air than most staghorn ferns. Still give it diffused light rather than harsh direct sun.
The silvery hairs on the fronds grow denser in strong light. Do not wipe them off: they cut water loss.
Like all staghorn ferns it tolerates drought far better than excess water. Water when the mount feels light, and water the medium, not the fronds.
P. veitchii produces pups readily, depending on conditions. See staghorn fern pups and dividing.
Like all staghorn ferns they are epiphytes: grow them mounted on a board or in a basket, never in soil. Light, temperature, humidity and watering at a glance: staghorn fern care quick reference. Full care notes: The Platycerium Textbook.
