Importing Platycerium into the EU

Phytosanitary certificate requirements for the European Union.

Plant health requirements for the European Union are set at Union level, under Regulation (EU) 2016/2031 and its implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/2072, so the phytosanitary conditions are the same in every member state rather than differing country by country.

Platycerium and other ferns fall within plants for planting from third countries, which require a phytosanitary certificate on introduction into the Union. For this category the certificate must carry an official statement that the plants were grown in nurseries, together with one of the following: that they originate in an area or place of production established by the exporting country's plant protection organization as free from the relevant regulated pests, stated on the certificate under “Additional declaration”; that the place of production was subject to official inspections at appropriate intervals during the months prior to export; or that the plants were given an appropriate treatment against those pests immediately before export, with the treatment recorded on the certificate, and were officially inspected and found free of them.

Which pests are relevant depends on the country of origin and on whether those pests are known to occur there. For material originating in Southeast Asia, Thrips palmi and non-European populations of Bemisia tabaci are among the ones commonly engaged.
