Bare-Root Shipping

When and how we ship Platycerium and rare ferns bare-root — and when we don't.

We don't ship bare-root by default. For most of our markets — Thailand and Southeast Asia, Japan, and Europe — plants travel with their growing media intact, because removing it isn't required there, and doing so unnecessarily can set a plant back significantly. Bare-rooting is stressful on the plant: recovery time lengthens, and the process itself is one of the more common causes of damage in transit if not handled carefully.

The exception is markets where it's a legal requirement — currently the USA and Canada — where plants must arrive completely bare-root, free of any growing media, as part of their plant quarantine rules (see our USA and Canada import guides).

Where bare-root shipping is required, we take it seriously. We've packed and shipped bare-root Platycerium and rare ferns to US and Canadian collectors and growers for years, handling each shipment individually based on species and size, with the goal of keeping the plant in the best possible condition until it's re-potted at the other end.
